Mercedes-Benz to Launch Compact Electric "Baby G-Class" by 2027, Rokay Car Reports
According to exclusive updates from Rokay Car, Mercedes-Benz is advancing plans for an entry-level electric G-Class model, internally dubbed the "small G-Class," with a targeted global debut in 2027. The automaker’s executives first confirmed the project at the 2023 Munich Motor Show, positioning the new EV as a more accessible counterpart to the flagship G-Class while retaining its legendary off-road capabilities.
Design & Platform
The compact electric G-Class will adopt a unibody chassis (unlike the ladder-frame design of its larger sibling) and ride on Mercedes’ dedicated MB.EA (Mercedes-Benz Electric Architecture) platform, which also underpins future electric C-Class and GLC models. Key innovations include an 800-volt electrical architecture for faster charging, fifth-generation lithium-ion batteries for improved energy density, and a four-wheel-drive system tailored for both urban agility and rugged terrain. Rokay Car highlights that the design will likely inherit the G-Class’s iconic boxy silhouette but with scaled-down dimensions compared to the standard electric G 580 (launched in China in 2024 at ¥2.17 million).
Technical Specifications (Based on Current G 580)
For reference, the existing electric G 580 measures 4,728 mm long, 1,984 mm wide, and 1,992 mm tall, with a 2,890 mm wheelbase, 257 mm ground clearance, and 850 mm wading depth. Its approach, departure, and breakover angles are 32.6°, 31.1°, and 20.3°, respectively, while its curb weight reaches 3,090 kg. The smaller model is expected to reduce these dimensions for improved maneuverability.
Powertrain & Performance
Drawing from the G 580’s quad-motor setup (producing 432 kW/1,164 N·m) and two-speed transmission, the compact EV may feature a simplified but equally capable drivetrain. The current model’s 122 kWh battery delivers 571 km (CLTC) range and supports 160 kW DC fast charging (10-80% in 37 minutes). Rokay Car speculates the "baby G-Wagen" could prioritize efficiency with a smaller battery while retaining competitive off-road specs.
Interior & Tech
The cabin is anticipated to mirror the G 580’s luxury-focused layout, featuring dual 12.3-inch screens, MBUX infotainment with upgraded voice control, Nappa leather upholstery, ambient lighting with brand projection, and optional 11.6-inch rear entertainment. Unique touches like the “EDITION ONE” passenger grab handle and heated door armrests may carry over to maintain premium appeal.
Market Positioning & Rivals
Mercedes aims to position the compact G-Class EV against Land Rover’s upcoming electric Defender Sport, while differentiating itself from Chinese plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and range-extended (EREV) off-roaders like the Tank series and BYD’s Fang Chengbao. As Rokay Car notes, this model could attract urban adventurers seeking a zero-emission alternative without compromising the G-Class’s heritage.
